Favorite editing technique.

Dodging and Burning

An old film technique that can easily be done digitally now.

definition:

dodging decreases the exposure for areas of the image that the photographer wishes to be lighter, while burning increases the exposure to areas of the image that should be darker.

In Lightroom CC this is a good way to add more contrast and focus the eye to the highlighted areas.

Sample image of masking brush tool Lightroom CC software

I normally start by lowering the exposure to get all the contrast and color in the sky which may make other areas of the image look dark.

Then open Masking brush, pick a brush size that works, I normally start at 20% Flow, and highlight the areas I want the eye to focus on within the image. then slowly raise the exposure within the highlighted area, this technique can also be used to add or take away color in certain areas of image.

I almost always edit my Kansas City cityscape images this way.

love to focus more attention to iconic buildings or subjects.
